This past Thanksgiving break, I tried to make it a point to cover some of the shows it seemed many of the people would miss, not necessarily the top of everyones priority list, but they certainly should have been. You’ll hear all about Congorock and Kid Sister at Webster Hall when the photos and interview video is all edited and prepped so for now lets talk a little bit about Erick Morillo and Holy Ghost.
On Wednesday night before Thanksgiving there was obviously a lot of options as to what to do in NYC, but Isobe and I said the decision was obvious to hit up Erick Morillo + Danny Tenaglia at Pacha NYC. We didn’t stay long enough to see Danny do his thing, which is a shame cause we still never have. But Morillo had a very interesting 3 hour set Isobe and I thought. First off its key to point out unlike any other lineup time we have ever seen, this is Morillo’s 2nd out of 3 gigs in 3 months at Pacha NYC. The man may be a co-owner but he never shows up like this. Considering the next party is his 6th anniversary party with the club, and the previous one was his annual Birthday Time Bash, this one was kind of just a fun thing for him to do with one of his best friends in the DJ world. Clearly experimenting with new tracks, everything sounded pristine the mixing was top notch, starting off with his medley of Shawnee Taylor songs from Live Your Life, to Where You Are and Stronger. We even saw Erick mix with the mainstream element in this set, dropping tracks like Michael Woods’ ‘First Aid’ and Calvin Harris’ ‘Feel So Close’ but what set would be complete without Avicii’s anthem ‘Levels.’ I did manage to ID one big track for you all, its the new Carl Kennedy banger and Morillo opened with it, recently it was featured on Tiesto’s Club Life Podcast.
Then last night, my final Saturday night in the city before my trek back out to school, Black Dada and I decided the best move in the city other than the Drop Crew’s own Booty Banger Party (which was a huge success) was over to Le Bain at the Standard Hotel to catch a Holy Ghost DJ set. Now if you don’t know this Holy Ghost is on James Murphy’s (The frontman from my favorite band LCD Soundsystem) record label DFA. They perform as a live band but this DJ set hit me right where I needed it, the underground disco soft spot. Le Bain honestly brings in some of the best acts in the city, and was the reason for me hearing these three tracks last night.
1. Drunk Girls (Holy Ghost Remix) – LCD Soundsystem
2. Jack On The Moon – Carte Blanche (RIP DJ Mehdi!)
3. Let The Beat Control Your Body – Brodinski Feat. Louisahhh
Overall thanksgiving break was filled with some serious music, look forward to coverage of the aforementioned Congorock set and the drops own party featuring BoB Gravity and Crisp in the coming days!
