A good friend of mine, Big Knives, (also known formally as Will Becker) just completed his first LP! Seeing his growth as a person and how that has affected his motives as an artist has been a really rad experience thus far. He was one of the first people, I began to discuss and explore electronic music with. While I have stayed with the more upbeat, conventional dance music, he has taken these past few years to really hone in on a more specific sound that comes out in all of his music. Influenced more by lo-fi hip-hop instrumentals (you will immediately draw comparisons), Afrikaans music and culture, as well as his own creative tendencies, Big Knives’ LP Fitsforyourhead is a refreshing listen, especially for summer. I recommend listening while driving especially. There seems to be a hidden yet unavoidable sense of motion that is woven throughout the LP, as Big Knives transforms his mangled jazzy samples the entire duration of his songs. The clear and present mix, the professional sampling plus the layered assortment of sounds, makes it hard to believe that the entire LP was created in Reason 4, a program known more as a box of instruments than a dedicated digital audio workstation. I implore you to give this album a listen, to understand the clear growth of it as well as the artist.
